Early incarnations of current fossil fuel-based shipping oils, have been readily available since the 19th century. They have also, historically, been cheap. These fuels are dirty, essentially being the dregs of the refining process, but the shipping industry has avoided much of the emissions and particulate regulation others in the transport industry have faced. This is because the fuels are mostly burnt far out at sea ‘out of sight, out of mind’.
