Max’s ‘Sizing up the obesity market’

26th December 2024

A simple glance at a crowd of people in any city across Europe and the US is proof enough that obesity is pervasive. Since the 1980s, global adult obesity rates have surged from around 4% to 14%. The situation in Europe and America is even worse, with obesity rates now 20% and 23% respectively. The rise of obesity carries with it a huge burden of human suffering. For example, a high Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of obesity, is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Adults who are obese at 40 can expect to lose four to seven years in life expectancy. Obesity has become a global pandemic, significantly impacting health and healthcare costs, particularly in Europe and the US, where obesity accounts for a staggering 20% of annual healthcare expenditures.
